About raptnrent: I got the name from my keys - R Apt and R Ent for the back door to my apartment and the back door to the house. I liked that they were also words: Rapt, meaning enthralled, riveted, captivated, and Rent, meaning torn asunder, violently wrenched. I thought it made for an interesting juxtaposition, open to all kinds of interpretations.

Looking down the well
One of the things that caught my attention while poking around the Whole Earth ‘Lectronic Link was this statement on their timeline: The WELL presented its first users with the sole disclaimer: “You Own Your Own Words.” I thought that … Continue reading
Chalk talk
I looked over Jim’s collection of chalkboard shots, and thought a little about each one. In the 70s, we see conditions developing – protocols (like FTP), applications (email, games), and personal computers (Apple II). These things are setting the stage … Continue reading
On to week two
This week we start looking where the Internet comes from. The class has put together a good collection of readings and summarized them. In addition to that, we’ve read Hafner and Lyon’s Where the Wizards Stay Up Late, Kevin Hughes’ … Continue reading
Wizards
I saw this movie when I was a kid. I don’t remember anything about it, so it may not even be relevant, but the title fits. So there. There were a few passages from Where the Wizards Stay Up Late … Continue reading
Summaries so far
The summaries I’ve skimmed through so far have been quite good. It’s interesting to consider the connections between them. The past and the future of the internet exist on a continuum rather than as two separate things, as Kim suggests. … Continue reading
Reading research
I have to say Bravo! to the class for their research so far. I was concerned that people would pull things from content farms, but so far almost everything has been serious academic research. There are pros and cons to … Continue reading
Crime online
When we were brainstorming ideas for The Internet Course, someone mentioned crime as one of the impacts. The truecrimers among us were very pleased. Criminology has produced plenty of research on cybercrime. Another way to find out about it is … Continue reading
Summary examples
Here are some examples of article summaries. Author names have been omitted. A good summary should give readers a clear idea of what an article is about, what arguments it makes and what conclusions is reaches. The point of summarizing … Continue reading
The Internet Strikes Back
Tomorrow starts the second session of The Internet Course. But instead of the leisurely twice-a-week over 15 weeks, 75-minute class pace of the Spring session, we’re doing two hours a day, four days straight every week for five weeks. “Heading … Continue reading
End of the line
Today is the end of the line for The Internet Course. I am truly amazed at the work that the class has done, and I think we’ve all learned a lot through this experience. I feel like I could have … Continue reading
