About raptnrent: I got the name from my keys - R Apt and R Ent for the back door to my apartment and the back door to the house. I liked that they were also words: Rapt, meaning enthralled, riveted, captivated, and Rent, meaning torn asunder, violently wrenched. I thought it made for an interesting juxtaposition, open to all kinds of interpretations.

“Paradise is exactly like where you are right now”
I thought of this song when I was reading The Kekulé Problem the other day. In it, McCarthy recalls, I suggested once in conversation at the Santa Fe Institute that language had acted very much like a parasitic invasion and … Continue reading

Out of their heads
I decided to try a random visual assignment and got The Boone Gorges Parent-Child Headswap. I didn’t have a child handy, but I did have The Tick. This was actually given to me by a child. A friend’s daughter, toddler … Continue reading
What’s hard about this
I’ve never seen Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus, but it is on my watchlist. And seeing that it is a spiritual kin to Godzilla, it fits perfectly with our Bob Ross theme. I had the idea to populate a Ross … Continue reading
Scheming on a theme
Jim Groom, a guru of both ds106 and the 80s, took some time to talk about the course with me. I have an edited version above, and the full discussion is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQ53L-lecUU I’m hoping it gives some ideas on … Continue reading

Creepy anime eye
This morning a saw a new creation from one of my favorite contemporary artists, Cris Shapan. This is in response to advertising for an upcoming film, Alita: Battle Angel, which dares to venture into an uncanny valley. What I really … Continue reading

Commencing inspection of Training Officer (TO) BOND’s backpack This is based on the What’s in your bag? assignment, which has been a required character-visualization assignment in the past. I applied it to the backpack I use, filtered through the secret … Continue reading
Old Blue Eyes
I was inspired to do this because Emily did one. I had forgotten all about this assignment. The cat lives up the street. I don’t know his name, so I call him Frank, after Sinatra, who was nicknamed “Old Blue … Continue reading
Guardian of the galaxy
Groom wrote about his favorite Groom art, which included Sharla’s revisioning of I Am Legend. But since I just saw Guardians of the Galaxy last weekend, I had to interpret it differently. At first I was going to use the … Continue reading
Wanted: Kidnapper
Someone’s gotta get this guy. Someone who knows the true value of a dutch oven. I grabbed his picture from the video with MPEG Streamclip and trimmed out the background in Photoshop. I googled for the border and the background … Continue reading
The Easter egg sky
This is the city – dark, gray, shadows and light – and the sky, like a sci-fi nuclear explosion of easter egg colors. It was the colors of the sunrise that caught my attention. My iPhone didn’t do them justice, … Continue reading
